LSU Health New Orleans educates 3,000 students every year, teaching them how to become exemplary health care providers, leaders in medicine, scholars in science, and innovators in healthcare technology. Of those 3,000 students, over 70% have demonstrated financial need. Scholarships ensure LSU Health enrolls individuals with diverse life experiences, an action essential to elevating health care in Louisiana.

Russell Scaife - LaRocca Scholarship

Russell Scaife

The Henry A. LaRocca, MD Scholarship in Medicine

Russell was born in Lexington,Kentucky, the youngest of 3 brothers. He was in a Spanish Immersion Program from kindergarten through 12th grade, becoming fluent in Spanish.Music, piano, and cello also became important to him during this time. Russell studied Biology and Cello Performance at Tulane University and met his future fiancée there. Russell lost both of his parents to cancer and found support from friends and neighbors. Now, happily living in Gretna with his fiancée and their puppy Andouille, he is excited about his medical journey. He is interested in radiology, pathology, or oncology, drawn to the research on breast cancer that affected his mother. Outside of his studies, Russell enjoys playing cello and piano, programming computers,cooking, and spending time with his dog.

“I chose the LSU Health School of Medicine for many reasons. I moved to New Orleans in 2017 and love the city immensely. I knew that going to LSU Here in New Orleans would provide me with many opportunities to give back to the city that has given me so much. I went on several tours of the LSU campus and was impressed by the amenities available to students, as well as the sense of camaraderie and teamwork that was readily apparent to all the faculty, staff and students. I have several friends and acquaintances who are current or former students at the LSU Health School of Medicine, and they all gave great accounts of their experiences here.”

Julia Cazabon - Beer Scholarship

The Marcia and Billy Beer Endowed Scholarship in Medicine

Julia was born and raised in New Orleans alongside two brothers. She attended St. Mary’s Dominican High School, graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors from the University of Georgia, receiving a Bachelor Science Genetics. Julia credits her family’s natural spirit sharing for driving passion to engage the community as a servant. Julia is looking forward to building a skillset that allows her to uphold the health of her community. She has volunteered with the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter for over five years. Participating in the rehabilitation of families has played a significant role in developing her career goals. She plans to contribute in a greater way as a student of medicine, and eventually as a physician. Outside of her studies, Julia enjoys cooking, reading, walking her dog Foster, and exploring local farmers’ markets and art festivals.

“I chose LSU Health because of its deep roots in Louisiana healthcare. I feel strongly about serving my community by practicing medicine in New Orleans, and it is clear that LSU Health physicians make up a large part of the community.”

Jaspreet Ahluwalia - Cao Scholarship

Jaspreet Ahluwalia

Edward Donaldson, Jr. Scholarship in Pediatric Dentistry

Jaspreet is from Lafayette, Louisiana. He went to college in Shreveport at Centenary College of Louisiana where he studied Biology and Neuroscience and swam competitively. Jaspreet went on to attend LSU School of Dentistry where he graduated in 2023. As a pediatric dentist, Jaspreet aims to become a proficient and empathetic pediatric dentist and to establish a practice that prioritizes comprehensive oral care for
children, focusing on preventive treatments and fostering positive dental experiences.
Outside of his studies, Jaspreet enjoys running and swimming.

Germaine and J. Jerome Smith, DDS Scholarship in Dentistry

Taylor was born and raised inLouisiana. When Taylor began her first year of dental school,she decided an associate position would be her plan upon graduating from LSU.Now as she enters her third year, she is finding herself curious of paths she had notconsidered before. She now loves general dentistry even more than when she arrived toLSU and has become curious about AEGD’s and GPR’s. Taylorhas begun researching programs that are fitting with the procedures she finds the most interest in and wants to become further competent in. Outside of her studies, Taylorenjoys any activities outside.She enjoys taking walks,relaxing in her hammock and thrift shopping.

“LSU was also special to me in the sense that they valued clinical experience so greatly. Being granted acceptance to my state’s school was a privilege and an opportunity that I would not pass up. Staying in Louisiana came with more positives than just the cost and curriculum, as I always knew there was something special about my state.”

Debra Schiro Scholarship and Donielle “Doni” Doucette Memorial Scholarship in Nursing

Tyler is a single parent pursuing a career in the nursing field. Hemoved to New Orleans in 2019 from Boise, Idaho with his daughter to pursue his nursing career. His career goals are to practice in a Level 1 Intensive CareUnit setting for a minimum of 2 years, to gain as much critical care experience as he can. From thereTyler intends to continue his education as a CertifiedRegistered Nurse Anesthetist(CRNA). Outside of his studies, Tyler enjoys playing music, skateboarding, taking his daughter hiking and traveling.

“I chose LSU Health because It Was one of the best programs in the country,” says Tyler. “I wanted to get the best education from the best educators so when I graduate and become a licensed RN I am confident in my practice.”
